A Summer Adventure at Powder Mill Ledges

Imagine stepping onto a quiet trail where the sounds of the road fade away and the forest begins to surround you so immediately that the greenery overwhelms you (but in a good way). Focusing becomes an important skill to master in that moment.

You zoom in on the ground and see giant green ferns surrounding you. You wander through the forest a bit and notice a field of flowers up ahead. Once you stand at the beginning of the field, the sound of buzzing overcomes any sound of the nearby road, and you realize you are in a whole new world.

The buzz of the bees all around makes you move a bit faster on the skinny path through the field of flowers until some wondrous berries stop you in your tracks.

You peer close to see what they are.

Blueberries?

No … hmmm?

You stop and think, make a note to research it, and snap a photo.

Then suddenly, with one step, you are deep in the woods and you almost miss the blue butterfly fluttering on the ground. Another photo.

It flies up to a tree that has a giant mushroom growing out of it in the shape of a spaceship. Another photo.

For a moment, it feels like you have stepped into the pages of Alice in Wonderland, where every turn leads to something new and impossible to ignore.

You pass a rocky wall, step over tangled roots beneath your feet, and follow the winding trail deeper into the woods. Then, as if the forest has opened a secret doorway, the trees fall away and the world stretches out before you. Suddenly, you’re high above the forest, surrounded by a landscape that feels almost too magical to be real. You pause, take it all in, and snap another photo before following the trail onward.

But when you turn back to the trail and look down, you see that you’re surrounded by pretty, colorful pinecones and can’t resist zooming in on one.

Something to research later: What tree did this fall from?

You rise from the close-up shot and, just as quickly as you ended up high above the woods, you’re somehow low again. Tall flowers surround you, almost as if you’ve stepped into another hidden corner of Wonderland, before the familiar greenery begins to wrap around you once more.

And then, slowly, the sounds of the road start to come back to life. The imagination wonders a little less and you move a little less quickly, knowing full well that home base is just up ahead.

You are glad you brought your camera.

Bring a camera or phone and become a nature detective. Along the trail, photograph three things you can’t identify — a plant, a mushroom, a tiny creature, or something else that catches your eye. When you get home, research your discoveries. What did you find? What surprised you? What new questions do you have about the world you explored?
